When I didn’t see Riot on Sunday, I tried to tell myself that she just needed a little space. Some time to come to terms with what happened.

But when Monday came, it felt a bit like Déjà Vu.

Riot had become such a constant presence in my life since our bond snapped into place that now that she was mysteriously absent from my bed, from our morning routine of brushing our teeth together and from my table at breakfast—disappointment didn’t even begin to cover it.

It was early enough that Mouse and Penny hadn’t yet made it to breakfast. I was just considering getting up to fetch my own plate when a cappuccino and four slices of toast with raspberry jam clattered down in front of me, making me flinch in surprise. Realising my mistake a second too late, I turned to meet Riot’s horrified honey eyes.

Her mouth twisted in resignation and sadness, hands fisting at her sides. “Sorry.”

“Hey, hey,” I said quickly, catching her wrist as she moved to back away from me, excitement heavy in my chest. “I missed you this morning. Why don’t you—”

Riot shook off my hand, the excitement that I felt turning to ash on my tongue as I watched her clear the steps towards The Ten’s table to sit beside a surprised-looking Wrath, his nose already recovered.

I chewed the inside of my cheek, my mood souring.

This solidified it: Riot was avoiding me.

At least this time I knew why, not that it made it any easier.

Poison joined me on my left side, swiping a piece of toast. Catching my stormy expression, they winced. “Yikes, what happened?”

I sighed miserably. “She’s avoiding me.”

“I thought that might happen.” Poison kissed my cheek before shoving the piece of toast in their mouth whole, talking with it full in a series of nonsensical muffled syllables.

“I didn’t catch any of that,” I said flatly, taking up my own piece of toast.

I wasn’t even hungry. It was more of a habit than anything else to eat it.

“I said,” Poison repeated as they swallowed. “Give her a minute. She’s probably feeling guilty.”

“No, I mean in the bond,” I said in frustration, rubbing my hand over my face. “She’s miserable, sure. Angry. Sad. This is so stupid, it wasn’t anyone’s fault—it was an accident!”

“But, she did hurt you,” Poison said.

“Did I die, though?” I snapped, rolling my eyes.

“No, but—”

“Then who cares!” I complained as Saint joined us.

“Who cares about what?” he asked, nudging my coffee closer to me.

“Riot avoiding her,” Mouse said, rolling her eyes as she joined us with Penny not far behind. “Yes, I noticed she hasn’t been home in two nights. What, did you go a little too hard in the bedroom after the game or something? You totally missed the afterparty.”

“I was busy,” I hedged.

Mouse might’ve been my best friend—well, other than Penny—but I couldn’t exactly tell her about Riot and Shadow, or that she’d, admittedly, come pretty close to killing me.

Penny looked between us, setting a tray of pancakes down in front of herself.
